Best Disinfectants For Mushroom Growing

WHAT ARE THE MAIN DISINFECTANTS USED?

hand-holding sprayer with a detergent cleaning product.

When disinfecting an area, may it be your still air box, a tub, or a full lab or home. We have found that there are pretty much two options to get the job done. The first and most effective method is to use Bleach. The second method is to use 70 percent Isopropyl Alcohol, no matter which you use, just make sure to NEVER MIX THE TWO. 99% Isopropyl evaporates very quickly, which does not allow it to penetrate cell walls and kill bacteria. and therefore isn’t as good for disinfecting surfaces.

WHAT ABOUT DISINFECTING SCALPELS OR SCISSORS?

Flame Sterilization

It is best to use a flame from a torch or lighter for disinfecting blades. Apply the flame to the blade until it glows red, then remove it and allow it to cool. If using iso and a flame in the same room or area, make sure you allow enough time for the isopropyl to evaporate before lighting the flame to avoid starting a fire.

HOW LONG IS DILUTED BLEACH EFFECTIVE?

When bleach is diluted into water for cleaning, it only holds its disinfecting properties for 24 hours and then begins to degrade. Make sure to make a new Bleach solution before cleaning to ensure proper disinfection.

HOW LONG IS DILUTED BLEACH EFFECTIVE?

On average when 70% isopropyl alcohol is exposed to air in small amounts it takes anywhere from 30 seconds – 10 minutes. This wide range in time is due to changing factors such as room temp, humidity, and amount of iso that was applied.
